The history of Onjal

Onjal village is about 16 KM South of Navsari. It has existed for more than 300 years and is about 6 square miles in size. It is surrounded on almost three sides by Kanai Khadi’s waters and the Arabian sea. Hence in monsoon season there is water everywhere as far as one can see. It is said that the name Onjal derived from Oh – Jal (Oh! Jal – water).

Onjal village has seven falias (streets). There is a nursery, a primary and a secondary school. The secondary school has recently introduce computer studies as part of its curriculum.

The primary school and the high school students achieve very good results according to the progress report received annually.

Shree Nanidevi Ma and Shree Ram-Shiv Mandir are the two temples in the village. Shree Nanidevi Ma is classed as “Kool Devi” and has existed for more than 200 years. It was also recognised by the British Raj. It has been renovated 2 years ago.

Shree Nanidev Ma Mandir is in Changli Falia and Shree Ram Shiv Mandir is in Nasna Falia.

Bhajans, Arti and all the festivals are celebrated in both Mandirs.

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel – one of the main politicians of India’s Independance visitied Onjal village and me the village residents at the Abhla Talaw in 1930 during the prohibition of foreign clothes.

A few facts:

  • Generally fish industries, farming and dairies are a lively-hood of the villages residents.
  • Ahirs and Harijans also live in the village.
  • The village Machhiwad is about a mile and a half away from the village.
  • Onjal also has a branch of Bank of Baroda and a post office.
  • The Arabian sea is half a mile away from the village.
  • A Vari-Gruh Onjal committee provides water to the residents. There are two talaws (water resevoir). One is called Desai Talaw and the second is called Abhla Talaw.
